The Criterion Collection's lineup for September includes a 4K set from Leos Carax, The Secret Agent, works by Richard Linklater, Satyajit Ray, and more.
A year after their Wes Anderson collection, which one can only hope becomes a tradition, the Criterion Collection is set to release a slightly more concise but equally important compilation from Leos Carax. This will include Boys Meets Girl, Mauvais Sang, and The Lovers on the Bridge, with It’s Not Me (arguably the best of the bunch?) included as a Blu-ray bonus. These lengthy films, which had uncertain availability in the U.S., are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. I will admit to a bit of greed in suggesting that Holy Motors and Annette should be released promptly thereafter.
Claude Lanzmann's Shoah—an iconic film and one of Criterion's most notable releases, which has recently gone out of print—is being reissued on Blu-ray, while 12 Angry Men will receive a 4K upgrade. In terms of contemporary cinema, two films premiering at Cannes in 2025 (Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent and Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague) will be released on 4K, and Sergei Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors joins the Janus Contemporaries series. Concluding the month on a high note is Satyajit Ray’s newly restored Days and Nights in the Forest, which will also be available in 4K.
