The September lineup from The Criterion Collection includes a 4K set by Leos Carax, The Secret Agent, works by Richard Linklater, Satyajit Ray, and more.
A year after their Wes Anderson collection, which one can only hope becomes a tradition, the Criterion Collection will introduce something a bit more concise yet equally significant: a compilation by Leos Carax featuring Boys Meets Girl, Mauvais Sang, and The Lovers on the Bridge, with It’s Not Me (possibly the standout of the bunch?) included as a Blu-ray bonus. These lengthy films, which have had uncertain availability in the U.S., are finally receiving the recognition they deserve. I can’t help but wish for Holy Motors and Annette to be released soon after.
Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah—marking an important milestone in cinema and one of Criterion’s key projects—returns to Blu-ray after being out of print, while 12 Angry Men receives a 4K upgrade. For modern cinema, two films premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival (Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent and Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague) are being released in 4K, and Sergei Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors joins the Janus Contemporaries lineup. Concluding the month nicely is Satyajit Ray’s recently restored Days and Nights in the Forest, now available in 4K.
