The Lesser-Known Works of Steven Spielberg with Bilge Ebiri
Welcome to The B-Side! Here, we focus on movie directors—not on the films that brought them fame or kept them in the spotlight, but on those they created in between.
Today, we explore the work of one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: Steven Spielberg! Our B-Sides include 1941, Hook, Amistad, and The Adventures of Tintin.
Joining us is our good friend and talented writer Bilge Ebiri! At the time of this writing, he has just released his article, The Raider of a Lost Art, which is an oral history about Spielberg coinciding with the debut of his new film Disclosure Day. He has previously discussed Spielberg with The Film Stage as well!
We talk about Spielberg’s early beginnings and the challenging production of 1941, his remarkable achievements in the ‘80s, the mixed outcomes of Hook, and the often-overlooked Amistad. We celebrate Spielberg’s remarkable run of films in the millennium, from Saving Private Ryan to Munich.
The three of us delve into Bilge's deep appreciation for Hook, he shares some additional, unpublished insights from his oral history, we recognize the brilliance of John Milius, and the unique camera work that brings so much energy to The Adventures of Tintin.
