Ballerina animated film set to expand with a sequel and a television series.
Although it's been a decade since France’s animation studio launched Ballerina, they are now expanding the film with a forthcoming sequel and television series.
Ballerina, known as Leap! in the United States, tells the story of a young girl who escapes a rural orphanage to chase her dream of becoming a ballerina at the Paris Grand Opera House. The English voice cast included Elle Fanning, Dane DeHaan, and Carly Rae Jepsen, while the French version featured Camille Cottin and Malik Bentalha.
The sequel will be penned and helmed by Laurent Zeitoun, with production by him and Gregory Ouanhon for Good Hero. Gaumont will handle worldwide distribution for a theatrical release in 2029. After the film, Good Hero plans to broaden the franchise into a television series, with Andre Burrell (Disenchantment) serving as the head writer, along with additional media, including digital videos on YouTube.
“The aspirational tale of female empowerment in Ballerina has continued to resonate with new audiences over the past decade, and is perhaps more relevant now than ever,” said Zeitoun and Ouanhon. “The film encapsulates the essence of pursuing your dreams — it highlights the universal values of overcoming obstacles, hard work, commitment, the power of artistic expression, and making a positive impact on the world by being authentic. We aim to broaden the Ballerina universe and present this enchanting, heartwarming story to a new generation of young women who embody these values.”
“Ballerina remains one of the most successful independent animated films at the global box office, showcasing its enduring strength and universal themes. The core of this franchise is timeless and can captivate multiple generations of families,” stated Alexis Cassanet from Gaumont.
Ballerina 2 is set to be released in 2029.
