Eddie Murphy will provide the voice for Donkey in the Shrek spin-off film set to be released in the summer of 2028.
Following the recent unveiling of the trailer for Shrek 5, Universal Pictures has revealed that the long-discussed Donkey spin-off film is set to be released in theaters on June 30, 2028. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eddie Murphy will reprise his role from the 2001 hit animated fairy tale, which earned $480 million, to explore Donkey’s origin story. The film will be co-directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Ninjago Movie and Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp) and Matt Flynn (The Bad Guys).
This isn’t the first solo venture from the Far, Far Away universe, as the films featuring Antonio Banderas, Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), have together grossed over a billion dollars. When combined with the $2.9 billion earned by the four main Shrek films, it appears to be a clear opportunity for Dreamworks Animation to further expand this universe.
Inspired by William Steig’s 1990 picture book, Shrek narrates the story of the titular ogre who lives in a swamp (voiced by Mike Myers), his loyal companion Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy), and Princess Fiona, the ‘True Love’ (voiced by Cameron Diaz). The highly anticipated fifth installment set for 2027 will introduce Zendaya (from Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
