Eddie Murphy will provide the voice for Donkey in a Shrek spin-off film set to be released in the summer of 2028.
Following the recent unveiling of the trailer for Shrek 5, Universal Pictures has revealed that the long-discussed Donkey spin-off film will be released in theaters on June 30, 2028. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as Donkey, which he first voiced in the 2001 animated hit that earned $480 million, to explore the character's origin story. Donkey will be co-directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Ninjago Movie and Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp) and Matt Flynn (The Bad Guys).
This won't be the first solo spin-off set in the Far, Far Away universe, as the films Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), starring Antonio Banderas, have collectively earned over a billion dollars. Adding this to the $2.9 billion generated by the four main Shrek films, it appears to be a logical step for DreamWorks Animation to further develop this universe.
Adapted from William Steig’s 1990 picture book, Shrek tells the story of the titular ogre (voiced by Mike Myers), his loyal companion Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy), and 'True Love' Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz). The anticipated fifth film set to release in 2027 will introduce Zendaya (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona.
