Genndy Tartakovsky is developing an animated series based on Conan the Barbarian in collaboration with Cartoon Network and Prime Video.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, is preparing to collaborate once more with Cartoon Network on an animated series about Conan the Barbarian, which is currently in development for Prime Video.
"I have been working on developing Conan since 2008, but the world wasn’t ready for it then," Tartakovsky shared through a video message during Warner Bros.’ presentation at the Annecy International Film Festival this week. "However, following the success of Adult Swim’s Samurai Jack and Primal, there's no better time for this project to come to fruition. I'm incredibly inspired by the works of Robert E. Howard, which I feel a personal connection to. I am really excited about this. Aside from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this is the only intellectual property I've worked on, and I believe it will be something special."
This return to Cartoon Network comes after Tartakovsky spent over fifteen years working mainly on feature films for Sony Pictures Animation, which includes the Hotel Transylvania series and the Netflix adult animated comedy Fixed.
The upcoming project will be the third animated series featuring Conan, following Conan the Adventurer, which aired for 65 episodes from 1992 to 1993, and its brief sequel Conan and the Young Warriors from 1994. This announcement also arrives alongside news that Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise his role from the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian and its 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer for the anticipated King Conan, directed by Mission: Impossible’s Christopher McQuarrie.
