Ranking All 12 Star Wars Movies, Featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu

Here are all 12 Star Wars films — including the latest The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Warning: spoilers ahead, and may the force always be with you.

      Let's get started.

First, here's how we ranked all the Star Wars movies.

We are passionate about Star Wars. A big part of it is loving and defending your interpretation of Star Wars — and standing up against versions of the saga that seem like mere cash-grabs or unworthy of its legacy.

For us, Rogue One is a prime example of a project that encapsulates the best of Star Wars.

Listed below are all 12 Star Wars films ranked from worst to best, including The Mandalorian and Grogu.

      12 — The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

We adore Star Wars. However, the sequel trilogy, which began with The Force Awakens, sometimes felt like newcomers playing with classic toys. The costumes and spacecraft looked right, even though the CGI backgrounds were somewhat distracting. But the characters felt flat and underdeveloped, leaving us questioning: Why are we here? Hasn't the Skywalker saga already been told?

The Rise of Skywalker felt like the most desperate installment of the sequel trilogy, as it (spoilers ahead, final warning) resurrected Emperor Palpatine without reason and unnecessarily resolved Rey’s parentage mystery (also: who cares?) by naming him her grandfather.

We just didn't experience the usual magic.

      11 — The Force Awakens (2015)

An unappealing film for all the reasons mentioned earlier, but we have additional complaints: The film resurrected Han Solo solely for his son to kill him, serving no purpose other than to make the whining Ben Solo/Kylo Ren appear to be a real threat. It's not Adam Driver's fault that Ren lacks the menacing presence of Darth Vader or the Emperor: he's written as a brat.

The new lead characters Rey, Poe, and Finn never really took off — they simply didn’t have enough to do. The biggest error in casting was putting Lupita Nyong’o, a charismatic, Oscar-winning actress, in the forgettable role of the CGI character Maz Kanata. She should have been a lead — in her human form. Unfortunately, we placed both The Rise of Skywalker and The Force Awakens on our list of Sequels Nobody Needs to See.

Still, it was lovely to see the original stars return.

      10 — The Phantom Menace (1999)

We have never had a more disappointing movie theater experience than the premiere of The Phantom Menace: odd aliens with stereotypical accents discussing… trade routes? We waited 16 years since Return of the Jedi and lined up for a midnight showing... for this?

There are many downsides to The Phantom Menace — its CGI never matched the practical effects of the original trilogy, Jar Jar, the confusing and unnecessary midichlorian dialogue — but there were also some positives.

Natalie Portman excelled as Padme Amidala, Liam Neeson offered a steady performance as Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi channeled Sir Alec Guinness while making his own mark. Darth Maul, portrayed by Ray Park, was a fantastic villain and disappeared far too soon. More on that soon.

      9 — Attack of the Clones (2002)

      Lucasfilm

It was okay. We liked the title, and it was exciting to meet Jango Fett.

Natalie Portman was again impressive — one of the most relatable characters in the Star Wars universe, and the heart of the prequels.

We wish her chemistry with Hayden Christensen had been better. It wasn't either actor’s fault — they just had some awkward dialogue.

      8 — Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Revenge of the Sith reinforced the sad notion that, even at their best, the prequels perhaps shouldn't have been created.

Similar to iconic movie villains like Hannibal Lecter and Freddy Krueger, Darth Vader becomes less intriguing the more you learn about him.

That said: Vader is one of the coolest elements in the Star Wars universe, and it was great to see him again, 22 years after his demise in Return of the Jedi. We just wish it hadn’t taken three sometimes tedious prequel films to reach this point.

      7 — The Last Jedi (2017)

This film has many critics, but let's recognize writer-director Rian Johnson for taking bold risks.

In contrast to the films that frame it in the sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens and Revenge of the Sith, The Last Jedi attempts to forge new ground by showcasing how ordinary people view the conflict between the Rebels and the Empire (or the Resistance and the First Order, as the new films retitled them).
