Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton Navigate the Giallo Underworld in the Trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's Her Private Hell.
A complete ten years have passed since The Neon Demon, and with the lengthy streaming series Too Old to Die Young and Copenhagen Cowboy perhaps representing a distinct, valuable career, Nicolas Winding Refn has made his comeback to feature films with Her Private Hell. Neon plans to release the film theatrically just two months later, and in anticipation of its July 24 premiere, a full trailer has been released, showcasing Sophie Thatcher reminiscent of Neon Demon and Charles Melton channeling vibes from Only God Forgives.
Rory O'Connor expressed his disappointment with Winding Refn’s vision following its debut at Cannes, noting, “If one word came to mind during the press screening, it was likely ‘pretentious,’ a term that’s fallen out of favor. When a character invitingly tells the audience they’re about to enter a famously scandalous party, only to reveal a rather vacant nightclub filled with Greek busts and blue/magenta strobe lights, it’s hard not to roll your eyes. Legendary composer Pino Donaggio, at 84 years old, offers what may be his final score, and it’s impressive. Yet, even considering the recent years of Refn’s life—where he faced a significant near-death experience during heart surgery—Her Private Hell is not seen as a triumphant return. In the press materials, he mentioned that this experience sparked a wave of new creativity. Let’s see what he brings.”
Here’s the summary: “When a mysterious fog envelops a futuristic city, releasing a deadly and elusive creature, a troubled young woman embarks on a journey to find her father. Her search intertwines with that of an American GI on a desperate mission to rescue his daughter from Hell.”
