10 Films That Show You Should Be Wary of What You Wish For

Your wishes may come true, but in film, there’s always a catch. Be cautious with your desires in these ten must-see cursed wish movies…

Some themes become reliable staples in cinema. One such concept is the notion of a wish gone awry. Whether in horror or comedy genres, this often leads the protagonist on a quest to undo their wish. From classic folklore like The Three Wishes to the well-known fable, The Monkey’s Paw (by W.W. Jacobs), which has seen numerous adaptations, the granting of a wish (or three) seldom ends well.

Of course, in literature or film, it wouldn’t create much tension or conflict if a wish for a million dollars came without complications or moral lessons. As viewers, we enjoy seeing wishes unravel. Here are ten films that emphasize caution when making wishes…

      Obsession

We begin with this year's unexpected hit, Obsession. Curry Barker, who transitioned from a YouTube star to a prominent voice in horror cinema, created this indie film on a budget under one million, which has become a cultural phenomenon among Gen-Z audiences. It has been described as the revival of micro-budget indie films and a transformation in the horror genre. While such claims might be exaggerated, Barker successfully delivers the monkey paw/cursed wish narrative with flair.

Much of its success can be attributed to Barker's straightforward yet effective approach, which avoids intrusive stylistic choices. Additionally, the film benefits from outstanding casting, particularly Michael Johnston as Bear, whose desire for his unrequited love, Nikki, to love him more than anyone else leads to disastrous consequences. Inde Navarette as Nikki delivers an impressive performance that stands out within the genre. She has a bright future ahead if she can avoid pitfalls like typecasting or being confined to mediocre mainstream roles. Unsurprisingly, Bear’s wish did not go as he envisioned.

      Labyrinth

“I wish the Goblins would take you away, right now!" A seemingly casual wish can have dire consequences. For Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), the frustrating task of babysitting her crying baby brother causes her to inadvertently wish him into the clutches of the Goblin King. Although it appears to be a children's film filled with puppets, songs, and adventures in a fantastical kingdom, it unfolds a darker psychological narrative about growing up that touches on themes of paranoid schizophrenia.

Wishing to erase the memory of David Bowie’s bulge might be a different story entirely. Throughout the film, Sarah seeks to correct her mistake while learning about personal responsibility. The film initially flopped but quickly gained a devoted following through VHS and beyond. Nearly 40 years later, Labyrinth has inspired numerous spin-off stories, both official and unofficial, while maintaining popularity through retrospective screenings, particularly sing-alongs. As far as misguided wishes go, this adventure concludes positively.

      Stalker

Stalker takes a unique approach to the pursuit of wishes. The titular Stalker serves as a guide for a Writer and a Professor navigating a dangerous, isolated zone to find "The Room," a place that grants one's deepest desires. The ambiguous threats in the Zone begin to unnerve the travelers as they draw closer to their destination and contemplate their ultimate wish.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s timeless arthouse classic adopts a minimalist approach to its sci-fi elements in favor of posing philosophical questions, guiding us on a profound journey of self-reflection. The Stalker recounts the tale of a man he once guided to the Room named Porcupine, who had a wish granted that he didn’t truly desire. Horrified by his own yearning, Porcupine took his own life. Tarkovsky prompts us to consider what our deepest, most concealed desires might be. It's likely not a million dollars or something trivial; the real answer might frighten you.

      Wishmaster

Robert Kurtzman helmed a film that misleadingly marketed itself as a Wes Craven project (who served as executive producer). However, he adeptly showcases his horror skills, even if the film initially received lukewarm reviews. Over time, appreciation has grown for this mixed bag of a movie. Released during the early days of CGI experimentation, Wishmaster bears the marks of the awkward phase when many filmmakers experimented with the new technology, yielding mixed results. However, in 1997, while some focused on CGI, many still relied heavily on practical effects, which are where Wishmaster excels with its grizzly and inventive gore.

The film is quite entertaining, with Andrew Divoff delivering a standout performance as the sinister Djinn, whose wishes are always accompanied by horrific consequences that the wisher realizes too late. Its popularity has certainly increased over time, as evidenced by its sequels and ongoing talks of a reboot.

      Bedazzled

Before the "Brenaissance," Brendan Fraser enjoyed a peak period in his career. After the success of The Mummy, he starred in a remake of the 1967 film, Bedazzled. Fraser teamed up with one
