A reboot of Free Willy has emerged at Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. and the Russo brothers are collaborating on a reimagined version of the 90s killer whale franchise Free Willy. According to a report from THR, the studio has enlisted Mary-Margaret Kunze (Miller’s Girl) and Jade Halley Bartlett (The Turning) to modernize the captive-whale narrative for today's audience.
The original Free Willy, released in 1993, depicted the story of a 12-year-old orphan named Jesse (played by Jason James Richter) who develops a friendship with an Orca whale held in captivity at a dilapidated water park. Upon learning that Willy is facing an uncertain fate, Jesse devises a plan to set the whale free.
Produced with a budget of $20 million, the film, directed by Simon Wincer (The Phantom), earned $153.7 million at the global box office and led to three sequels, albeit with decreasing success, alongside an animated TV series and the hit Michael Jackson song ‘Will You Be There’.
