Michael Mann's Manhunter: The Final Cut Releases Trailer for 40th Anniversary Restoration

Michael Mann will take to the director’s chair this November for Heat 2––bringing together an impressive cast that includes Christian Bale as Vincent Hanna and Leonardo DiCaprio as Chris Shiherlis, with Adam Driver in negotiations for Wardell and Stephen Graham as Neil McCauley. Meanwhile, audiences will have the opportunity to see one of his earlier crime dramas on the big screen. To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Manhunter: The Final Cut will be released on July 24 in a newly restored 4K version.

“Forty years ago, although based on Thomas Harris’ exceptional novel, ‘Red Dragon,’ the themes of profiling serial killers were largely uncharted territory and quite shocking. In adapting it, my goal was to create a narrative that immerses viewers in a specific sense of threat and emotional involvement. Key to that was the visual interpretation and the strategic use of music, with lyrics often serving as a libretto. We meticulously remastered the film to capture that mood and intensity, enhanced by audio derived from the original 5.1 35mm analog masters. This newest version is the one I am most pleased with,” stated director Michael Mann.

Here’s the plot summary: “A retired criminal profiler (William Petersen) is pulled back into the FBI to assist in tracking down a serial killer targeting families, leading him to consult an expert—the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox, delivering a subtly chilling performance). The third feature written and directed by Michael Mann, this compelling adaptation of the first of Thomas Harris’s four novels featuring the infamous murderer showcases the filmmaker’s signature striking visuals alongside an outstanding supporting cast, including Tom Noonan as the pursued killer and three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen (The Contender, 2000) as his blind love interest.”

Under Mann's direction, this 4K scan of the original 35mm negative––with a few shots taken from an interpositive––was conformed and digitally restored at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna. Both the theatrical version and the UHD HDR & SDR video color gradings were executed by Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3 in Los Angeles, in collaboration with the director. The sound restoration was completed at Audio Mechanics from an original 35mm magnetic 6-track printmaster, resulting in a new 5.1 mix by Luke Schwartzweller at Fox. Technical coordination and delivery were overseen by L’Immagine Ritrovata, with supervision from Becca Mann and the STUDIOCANAL team, Jean-Pierre Boiget and Delphine Roussel.

Mann remarked, “If the film had been left as it was, it would still be intriguing, but there would be a sense of distance… you'd be more of an observer. I’m more interested in replicating its original impact on you, just as it might have in 1986… aiming to pull you back into the experience as it was intended.”
