Victorian Psycho Trailer: Maika Monroe Embraces Gothic Elements in Cannes Horror Film
While Maika Monroe is currently filming a sequel to her breakout role in They Follow, she will soon appear in a gothic horror film. Directed by Zachary Wigon, Victorian Psycho was presented at Cannes earlier this year and is set for release on September 25. Ahead of its launch by Bleecker Street, a new trailer has been unveiled, featuring Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson, and Thomasin McKenzie.
The synopsis reads: “Taking place in Victorian England, Victorian Psycho tells the story of an eccentric governess who arrives at a secluded gothic manor, where eerie occurrences raise doubts about her true identity.”
Savina Petkova noted in her Cannes review, “In 1858, before Freud's time, the Ensor House castle located in the Yorkshire moors of Northern England becomes the new home for young governess Winifred Notty (Maika Monroe, continuing her horror journey since Longlegs). Awaiting her is a predictably stiff and wealthy family, the Pounds, which includes Mrs. Pounds (Ruth Wilson), Mr. Pounds (Jason Isaacs), their heir Andrew (Jacobi Jupe), and their teenage daughter Drusilla (Evie Templeton). However, the script—adapted from Virginia Feito’s novel—holds several unexpected twists. Following the erotic thriller Sanctuary with a period piece and a mysterious storyline, director Zachary Wigon effectively embraces this shift to gothic horror: the charmingly eccentric Victorian Psycho showcases both his versatility and dedication to the genre.”
