Samara Weaving has been cast as Emma Frost in the reboot of Marvel's X-Men.
As the MCU progresses towards the peak of the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the ‘Mutant Saga’ is starting to take form. Deadline has reported that Samara Weaving, known for her role in Ready or Not, will join the cast of Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot as Emma Frost.
The report indicates that Weaving was among several candidates who auditioned for the role recently and is now set to take on the character, who first appeared as a supervillain and the ‘White Queen’ of the Hellfire Club in the iconic 1980 Dark Phoenix Saga, eventually joining and even leading the X-Men in the comics. Previously, she was played by January Jones in her villainous role in Fox’s X-Men: First Class.
Weaving marks the first official casting announcement for Marvel’s X-Men reboot, which is directed by Jake Schreier of Thunderbolts fame, with a script by Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear). Unless a situation akin to John Krasinski's Mister Fantastic arises, it seems reasonable to expect that – SPOILERS – she’ll be appearing at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters alongside Sadie Sink, who made her MCU debut this week as Jean Grey in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day sequel.
Weaving's casting follows the recent announcements of Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider and David Johnsson as Black Panther at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con International. As for Emma Frost’s fellow mutants in the X-Men reboot, various names are circulating thanks to the rumor mill, but considering Weaving’s casting flew under the radar, it may be wise to wait for official confirmations or reports from trade sources – or Disney’s D23 Expo later this month.
