Alicia Silverstone is set to reprise her role as Cher Horowitz in the sequel series to Clueless.

      Paramount+ has confirmed that Alicia Silverstone will reprise her role as the iconic Cher Horowitz in an upcoming event series sequel to the beloved 90s teen comedy Clueless.

      “Clueless is making a return,” stated Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+. “Over thirty years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz enchanted audiences with her distinctive style, quick humor, and unwavering optimism, contributing to Clueless becoming a box office success and a pop culture staple. We take great pride in filming this eagerly awaited series in Los Angeles, honoring its significance in the original film while also investing in the city’s incredible talent and crews.”

      The logline for the sequel series notes: “Set 30 years after the original film, Cher Horowitz, the cherished Beverly Hills icon, has accomplished much: she enjoys professional success and has excelled in motherhood—until her daughter enters high school, and Cher discovers that raising a teenager once again leaves her feeling ‘clueless.’”

      Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The OC, Gossip Girl) along with Jordan Weiss (Freaky Friday, Dollface) are writing and executive producing the series, while Alicia Silverstone will also serve as an executive producer alongside Amy Heckerling, the writer-director of the original film, and producer Robert Lawrence.

      Released in 1995 and loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless portrayed wealthy Beverly Hills high schooler Cher Horowitz as she navigated adolescence, played matchmaker for her teachers, and helped give a “clueless” new student a makeover to gain popularity. The movie inspired a three-season TV series spinoff in 1996, which Silverstone did not participate in, although she did reprise her role as Cher in a 2023 Super Bowl commercial.

      The news of the sequel series first surfaced last year, with the streaming service Peacock initially involved; however, the NBCUniversal-owned platform recently decided to cancel the project, paving the way for Paramount+. This followed an earlier effort by Peacock to develop a mystery-themed TV series reboot.
