The Odyssey surpasses The Dark Knight Rises to claim the title of Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film at the box office.
The box office is thriving this summer, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day leading the way, raking in $1.67 billion globally as it concludes its second weekend. Christopher Nolan is also celebrating a significant milestone this morning, as his epic film The Odyssey has pushed its global earnings to $1.105 billion, marking the highest-grossing release of his career.
The highly praised film, featuring Matt Damon as the legendary Greek hero Odysseus, has surpassed Nolan’s previous record set by 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085 billion) during its fourth weekend in theaters. It is currently the second highest-grossing R-rated film, following Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine ($1.3 billion), and has yet to release in China. Additionally, it has surpassed Avatar’s $271 million to become the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time, accumulating $289 million from that format.
The Odyssey is Nolan’s third film to exceed the $1 billion milestone, following The Dark Knight Rises and its 2008 predecessor The Dark Knight ($1.005 billion). Meanwhile, 2023's Oscar winner Oppenheimer fell slightly short with a total of $975.8 million worldwide. The combined box office gross for the filmmaker now stands at $7.35 billion, placing him behind only Steven Spielberg ($10.9 billion) and James Cameron ($10.6 billion) among the highest-grossing directors, though the Russo Brothers ($6.76 billion) may challenge that positioning when Avengers: Doomsday releases in December.
“After the Trojan War, Odysseus must navigate a perilous journey home to Ithaca, encountering creatures such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Calypso along the way.”
The impressive cast of The Odyssey includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page, Hamish Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Nick Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Vlamis, and Iddo Goldberg.
The Odyssey is currently showing in theaters.
