James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, has revealed the upcoming series for HBO Max titled The People v. Gorilla Grodd, featuring Superman's Skyler Gisondo as the lead. This mockumentary true crime series comes from the creators of American Vandal. Gunn had previously hinted at a series centered around Jimmy Olsen and the villain Gorilla Grodd, but this is the first official announcement detailing the series and its storyline. He shared the news on Instagram, posting a fictional article from the Daily Planet, which outlines how Jimmy Olsen will investigate Grodd's trial for the alleged murder of his father, a crime Grodd has always insisted he did not commit. The official synopsis states:

In The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a highly intelligent ape is found guilty of killing his father, the King of Gorilla City. Through an eight-part "true" crime docuseries, Jimmy Olsen of the Daily Planet reexamines the case, seeking to determine if Gorilla Grodd was wrongfully convicted in one of Metropolis' most notorious murder trials.

Gisondo will reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen, joined by Jimmy Tatro (The Hawk) as Gorilla Grodd. Returning from Superman with Gisondo are Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. New cast members in Gunn's DC Universe include Mary Holland (Little House on the Prairie), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Dan Perrault (The Residence), and Arian Moayed (Wonder Man).

The People v. Gorilla Grodd was developed by Gunn and Peter Safran, who will serve as executive producers. Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault from American Vandal will be the showrunners, writers, and executive producers, with Yacenda directing all eight episodes. This project follows their previous Netflix comedy series, which similarly adopted a true crime mockumentary style to portray high schoolers investigating a notorious prank to exonerate the accused.

“We’re excited about creating a series that feels like an artifact from the DC Universe rather than merely another entry into it,” Yacenda and Perrault remarked. “It’s like a Daily Planet original documentary for the citizens of Metropolis, appealing to fans of comics, comedy, and true crime. While we can’t anticipate audience reactions just yet, it’s already a massive hit in Metropolis, where they love this series.”

“Thanks to Skyler’s remarkable performance and the great chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we recognized that we had a fantastic world to explore right after ‘Superman,’” said Gunn and Safran. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with the talented Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda to guide the audience through the more humorous and darker aspects of the DC Universe as Jimmy shines a light on the criminal justice system of Metropolis in his docuseries.”

“We are eager to collaborate with Tony and Dan, along with James, Peter, the entire DC team, and our colleagues at WBTV, to introduce these iconic DCU characters to HBO Max in a unique way,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO & HBO Max Comedy Series. “We already know Skyler Gisondo is perfectly suited for the role of Jimmy Olsen, and we are excited for fans to see Jimmy Tatro’s engaging and hilarious performance as Grodd.”

This announcement comes just a week after the premiere of Lanterns, which received significant viewership and positive feedback from fans and critics. Meanwhile, Gisondo will reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, set for release on July 9, 2027, alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Sara Sampaio, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Frank Grillo, and María Gabriela de Faría.
