13 Highly Profitable Films That Earned Over 100 Times Their Production Budget at the Box Office - MovieMaker Magazine

      In celebration of the remarkable success of the new Obsession, here are 13 highly lucrative films that have yielded at least 100 times their production costs.

      While many of these films are in the horror genre, not all are.

      Here’s the list.

      First… Box Office vs. Return on Investment

      Among the top-grossing films ever, you’ll find blockbusters like Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. These films have generated billions globally.

      However, those figures are less impressive when considering their production costs. For example, Endgame reportedly had a budget between $350 million and $400 million.

      In contrast, the films listed below were produced for minimal costs compared to the enormous profits they garnered.

      The Blair Witch Project (1999)

      Today, replicating a phenomenon like The Blair Witch Project would be nearly impossible, and the social media buzz surrounding such a film would likely be overwhelming. It wasn't the original found-footage horror movie, but it elevated the concept commercially and intensified interest in that style.

      Marketing framed The Blair Witch Project as a documentary, not fiction. The actors, all relatively unknown, were presented as real missing persons. The growth of the internet in 1999 further aided the film’s promotion. Eventually, it became clear that it was a fictional tale; however, the “witch” aspect might have been a clue.

      Regardless, the film grossed $248.6 million worldwide on a budget of under $1 million.

      Mad Max (1979)

      Mad Max: Fury Road had a production cost of around $150 to $185 million, but George Miller had quite a journey to reach that point. He began as a filmmaker making experimental short films before creating one of the quintessential action blockbusters.

      The original Mad Max was produced on a low budget, feeling grittier and more raw than its sequels, which were backed by bigger budgets. Shot in his home country of Australia, Miller cast a then-unknown Mel Gibson in the lead role. Mad Max was created for A$400,000, equivalent to just over $250,000 today. It went on to earn $100 million, making the list of films that achieved 100 times their budget and launching a franchise that will include Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in 2025.

      Halloween (1978)

      We could have compiled a list solely of horror films eligible for this list. Halloween is already the second one mentioned, with a few more to follow, but we aimed for variety. However, Halloween had to be included as John Carpenter significantly impacted the horror genre. Plus, it remains one of the most effective horror movies ever made.

      Some have claimed that Halloween invented the slasher film, which is inaccurate since Bob Clark’s Black Christmas predates it, along with some Italian horror films. Nevertheless, Halloween popularized the genre in America and helped define some of its conventions.

      Moreover, it was incredibly profitable. Carpenter’s film had a budget of around $300,000 and ultimately grossed $70 million worldwide.

      Additionally, it’s regarded as one of the scariest films of the 1970s — or any decade, for that matter.

      Super Size Me (2004)

      Numerous hit documentaries could qualify for this list, given that they typically have low production costs. To represent the genre, we’re highlighting one of the most well-known documentaries, which provided exceptional returns: Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me.

      Part of the “stunt documentary” subgenre, Spurlock – an ordinary individual – spent a month eating only McDonald’s to see the effects on his health. The film sparked discussion, changed perspectives on fast food, and effectively ended the Super Size option at McDonald's and similar offerings elsewhere. It also turned a significant profit.

      With a budget of $65,000, it earned $22 million.

      The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

      The Texas Chain Saw Massacre serves as both a proto-slasher and a proto-found footage film. It's framed as being based on a true story, although it wasn't, as a critique of the sensationalistic media of the time. Additionally, it's arguably one of the greatest movie titles of all time, with the tagline, “Who will survive and what will be left of them?” also being iconic.

      Tobe Hooper’s film was created on a low budget, which was feasible when the most elaborate special effect was essentially a chainsaw. The film cost under $140,000, with some estimates as low as $80,000. It grossed $30.9 million, providing a tremendous return on investment and influencing countless horror filmmakers to come.
