4K Ultra HD Evaluation – Disclosure Day (2026)

      **SYNOPSIS:**

      Disclosure Day didn’t fully resonate with me, but if you found enjoyment in it, then this 4K Ultra HD release is worth the investment. The film looks impressive, which is to be expected since it was released this year, and it comes with an extensive 54-minute behind-the-scenes feature directed by home video expert Laurent Bouzereau.

      I genuinely wanted to appreciate this film. As I’ve mentioned several times, I grew up watching Spielberg and Lucas films during the 70s and 80s, which were very formative for me.

      However, Disclosure Day fell short for me, primarily because the characters’ motivations are hidden beneath a convoluted mess of ambiguous government agency schemes, and the conclusion, in particular, fails to maintain my suspension of disbelief. (To be honest, I was already over the lens flares by the halfway point.)

      I understand that Spielberg is known for mastering the deus ex machina trope, and when he captivates my attention from the beginning, I can often overlook plot inconsistencies by the time the third act rolls around, caught up in the drama of "Oh my gosh, are our heroes actually going to succeed?"

      Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for me with Disclosure Day. If he succeeded in captivating you, like he did with my daughter, that’s fantastic. I’m happy for you, and you’ll likely want to get this 4K Ultra HD version of the film. I can only shrug and say, “To each their own.”

      In this movie, Emily Blunt plays meteorologist and news anchor Margaret Fairchild, who unexpectedly begins speaking in an alien language during a broadcast. This occurs amid a geopolitical crisis that threatens to escalate into nuclear war, following cybersecurity specialist Daniel Kellner’s (Josh O’Connor) theft of materials from a secretive government contractor named Wardex.

      Colin Firth portrays Wardex CEO Noah Scanlon, who leads the search for Daniel, which ultimately fails when the young man escapes using alien technology that he stole. However, Noah also has access to this technology, enabling him to see through other people's eyes and exert control over their bodies.

      Daniel flees with his girlfriend, Jane Blankenship (Eve Hewson), while Margaret opposes her boyfriend Jackson (Wyatt Russell), who wants to have her committed to a mental health facility due to her apparent breakdown, and she follows a psychic urge toward an undisclosed location.

      There are reminiscent elements of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and composer John Williams’ score features some themes reminiscent of that classic film, but Disclosure Day failed to engage me in nearly the same way that Spielberg’s 1977 masterpiece did.

      Maybe it’s a sign of my advancing age, but there are plenty of contemporary films I enjoy, and I think Spielberg has produced some solid works in the last decade, like The Fabelmans and Ready Player One (I'm among those who didn’t enjoy the book, though). I just feel that Disclosure Day missed the mark, although I didn’t loathe it as much as a friend who nearly walked out of the theater.

      This 4K Ultra HD edition includes the film on both 4K and Blu-ray discs, as well as a code for a digital copy. The bonus features are minimal, but it does include the extensive 54-minute making-of Encountering the Unknown: Inside Disclosure Day, produced by the well-known home video figure Laurent Bouzereau, who has documented many of Spielberg’s films. This feature takes full advantage of its duration to explore its subject thoroughly.

      The only other extra is a four-minute featurette that briefly examines the 52-year, 30-film partnership between Spielberg and Williams, who is now 94 years old and hopefully will continue to compose film scores for many more years.
