La lineup 2025 di Japan Cuts presenta Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Teki Cometh e altro ancora

      L'ultimo decennio di cinema non ha portato una certificazione maggiore di Kiyoshi Kurosawa come regista preminente del Giappone. Il pensiero mi viene in mente guardando la programmazione per l'edizione 2025 della Japan Society di Japan Cuts, sponsorizzata da GU, in programma dal 10 al 20 luglio, e la principale vetrina del Nord America per il cinema giapponese che vanta quattro dei suoi lungometraggi: due nuovi, due di repertorio, due di nome Serpent's Path e uno su una stampa 35mm incredibilmente rara. Le anteprime newyorkesi di Cloud and the 2024, great, still-undistributed Serpent's Path si svolgono con il regista di persona, così come una stampa di License to Live del 1998 e Serpent del 1998 restaurata in 4K e distribuita da Janus Films. Questi ultimi due si inseriscono nella sezione Classics di Japan Cuts, completata dalla Lettera d'amore del grande Shunji Iwai, che debutta anche con un restauro in 4K.

      Tra i titoli più recenti garantirò il film d'esordio formalmente flessibile ed emotivamente sintonizzato di Saki Michimoto See You Tomorrow, mentre Teki Cometh di Daihachi Yoshida è stato facilmente il miglior titolo del Tokyo International Film Festival dello scorso anno e qualcosa che ho aspettato la parte migliore di un anno per ottenere una prima locale. I tagli del Giappone sono altrimenti terreno fertile per la scoperta, e la mia ignoranza di tutto il resto è benvenuta.
