Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve reunite for Cristian Mungiu's Fjord.
Like many actors caught in the Marvel machine, the demanding shooting and promotional duties often lead to numerous projects showcasing their more daring and commendable acting abilities never coming to fruition. As Sebastian Stan continues to broaden his career, he has been amassing an impressive resume of performances. Following one of the standout performances of last year in A Different Man and his Oscar-nominated role in The Apprentice, he is now heading to Europe to collaborate on Cristian Mungiu’s follow-up to R.M.N., and new details about the plot have emerged.
Also featuring his A Different Man co-star Renate Reinsve, the film is titled Fjord and is set to begin a 40-day shoot this March in Norway, as reported by Cineuropa. Set in Ålesund on Norway's west coast, it is characterized as a "tense family drama." With cinematographer Tudor Vladimir Panduru (R.M.N., Întregalde, Malmkrog), editor Mircea Olteanu (R.M.N., Graduation), production designer Marius Winje Brustad (The Innocents), and costume designer Kirsi Gum involved, the synopsis is as follows:
The narrative centers on two families residing in a small, isolated Norwegian village. One family is Romanian while the other is Swedish-Norwegian. Their children, who are of similar ages, attend the same school, and the families initially connect over their common experiences as parents. However, their seemingly smooth relationship begins to deteriorate as differing cultural views on family dynamics, education, and societal values surface. The film delves into the difficulties of reconciling personal beliefs with societal norms in an increasingly globalized world, examining cultural differences, the limits of personal privacy, and the thresholds of tolerance within a tight-knit community. Stan portrays Mihai, a Romanian expatriate living in Norway, while Reinsve plays Lisbet, Mihai’s Norwegian counterpart.
“With all of these smaller indie films, I always feel that even while I’m on the plane heading there, I worry, ‘Will the financing come through?’ It’s on its way,” Stan shared with IndieWire. “He’s been with me for a few years alongside filmmakers from Romania, and I’ve been trying to find a way to work with him where I can also speak Romanian. We finally discovered this story about a Romanian family that has moved to Norway, only to find themselves embroiled in a very complex trial. There’s a system investigating cases of possible physical abuse within families, whether between parents or children. They look into the family following an incident, which leads to this trial. It occurred before the pandemic and garnered national attention. Many religious communities rallied to support them, and it’s quite fascinating and complicated.”
Fjord is anticipated to premiere in 2026.
