Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms series is being developed by Netflix, with Shawn Levy from Stranger Things involved.
Netflix is preparing to invest in a new high-budget fantasy series, as Deadline reports that the streaming platform has enlisted Shawn Levy, the executive producer of Stranger Things and director of Deadpool & Wolverine, to create a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series. Titled Dungeons & Dragons: The Forgotten Realms, the proposed show will be set in the renowned Forgotten Realms campaign setting, which also inspired the 2023 movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, although it will not be connected to that film.
Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast have been aiming to create a Dungeons & Dragons series for several years. Earlier, Paramount+ had greenlit an eight-episode series from Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed), with plans for production by Paramount Pictures and Hasbro-owned eOne. However, this version was ultimately scrapped due to a shift in focus at Paramount+ and Hasbro's sale of eOne to Lionsgate in 2023. Despite this, Crevello continued to work on redeveloping the concept alongside Shawn Levy, whose 21 Laps production company later became involved, bringing the project to Netflix. This partnership seems fitting, especially given the game's significant presence in Stranger Things, which has already given rise to a comic book crossover, with a second one set to debut this week [get a sneak peek here].
