Captain America grosses $192 million globally, while Bridget Jones performs impressively at the box office.
Despite modest projections and a mixed reception from critics, Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World has achieved respectable figures during its opening weekend at the global box office. In our ★★ review (which you can read here), we described Brave New World as "the same new mediocrity," and the film opened with a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, audiences still turned out to see Anthony Mackie's solo journey with the shield, contributing to a global box office total of $192.4 million.
This figure includes a domestic opening of $100 million over the extended Presidents Day weekend in North America, where the film, directed by Julius Onah, received a B- CinemaScore—the lowest rating for any film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In contrast, the other sequel from a long-standing franchise released this week encountered no such difficulties. Even though it was directly released for streaming in the U.S., Miramax, Universal, and Working Title's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy garnered an impressive $35.5 million internationally, featuring a record-breaking opening weekend for a rom-com in the U.K. with $14.9 million.
Paddington in Peru finally made its way to North American theaters, where it performed well, adding a $16 million total over four days to its international earnings of $115.8 million.
