Your preferences might differ — so feel free to share your own favorites. Comedy is personal, after all.
You'll notice there's a tilt towards newer shows. Comedy often revolves around breaking boundaries, making it difficult for older series to remain funny as those boundaries evolve. A daring joke from 1960 could come off as mundane today.
Lastly, this isn't a ranking of the "best" or "most adored" comedies, or those featuring our favorite characters — rather, these are the shows that had us laughing uncontrollably.
With that clarification, let’s explore the funniest TV shows we've ever watched.
The Righteous Gemstones
HBO
Returning this weekend for its fourth and final season, The Righteous Gemstones brilliantly blends comedy and drama — along with shocking violence — better than any other show we've seen.
This series about a family-run mega-ministry features an exceptional main cast, with everyone delivering memorable performances. Benjamin Jason Barnes (Tim Baltz) had us laughing harder than anyone else with his response to Baby Billy (Walton Goggins) tipping over a trailer filled with remedies for “covids” and other ailments.
You could argue that all three of Danny McBride’s HBO series — the others being Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals — deserve to be included in this list of funniest TV shows.
Favorite line: “The elixirs…”
Chappelle’s Show
Comedy Central
Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan produced one of the most astonishing sketch shows ever, one that Comedy Central executives later admitted they didn’t fully grasp, as Brennan mentioned on the Joe Rogan podcast.
The character of blind racist Clayton Bigsby — unaware of his own race — might be the quintessential Chappelle's Show creation: provocative, absurd, but primarily just hilariously funny.
Favorite line: Come on, the classic is “I’m Rick James, b—-.”
The Simpsons
Fox
As the longest-running comedy in television history, it may also be the finest. While its quality has fluctuated across seasons, The Simpsons has introduced more brilliant characters than any other show while imparting plenty of simple wisdom.
Of all the shows on this list, it’s also unmatched in delivering unexpected jabs at beloved chain restaurants.
Favorite line: “I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s!”
In Living Color
Fox
In Living Color would go to any lengths for a laugh, no matter how inappropriate or absurd, and we’re glad to include it in our list of funniest TV shows.
The show relied heavily on vibrant characters and catchphrases, like “Fire Marshall Bill” and “Men on Film,” but we adored its quirky observational sketches like “Hey Mon,” a sitcom featuring a dedicated West Indian family.
Favorite line: “How many jobs does he have?”
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
FX
We hold deep respect for Always Sunny for never attempting to make its lead characters intelligent, likable, or admirable over its 16 seasons. Charlie Day, Glen Howerton, Kaitlin Olsen, Rob McElhenney, and of course, Danny DeVito, might just be the funniest cast in sitcom history, even if Emmy voters overlook them due to their basic-cable origins and refusal to conform.
We appreciate the audacious early episodes, but we also enjoy watching The Gang struggle to virtue signal in today's supposedly more socially aware times. Ultimately, we measure the funniest TV shows by how much they make us laugh — and few shows surpass this one in that regard.
Favorite line: “Turn the cage so I can see!”
South Park
Comedy Central
While others hold back, South Park speaks its mind. Over nearly 30 years, it has targeted everyone, and we love it — even when poking fun at people and institutions dear to us. It's one of the funniest and most fearless shows on television.
Plus, we think about the Mad Max episode every single day.
Favorite line: “Respect my authoritah.”
The Office
NBC
Are you a fan of the British The Office? Or the American version? The good news is you don't have to choose. Both are exceptional.
We recently watched the “Gay Witch Hunt” episode from 2006 on a plane — a time when many more individuals were in the closet at work, and same-sex marriage was not legal. And it absolutely held up, right down to the cringe-worthy forced kiss between Michael (Steve Carell) and Oscar (Oscar Nuñez).
Favorite line: “That’s what she said. Or he said.”
I Think You Should Leave
Netflix
Tim Robinson, a former Saturday Night Live writer and actor who was simply too unconventional for the show, created I Think You Should Leave, the latest entry on our list — perhaps the one that has evoked the hardest laughs.
It boasts an outstanding batting average,
