Severance has been renewed for a third season, although the extended break between seasons was "definitely not" part of the original plan.
With the conclusion of the second season of Apple TV+’s acclaimed sci-fi series Severance today, Apple quickly announced its return for a third season, this time promising not to have an extended 3-year gap between seasons, as indicated by producer Ben Stiller.
Severance centers on a group of individuals at a tech company who have undergone a procedure to segregate their personal and work memories, and the series delves into the deepening mystery surrounding the true implications of this operation. The show initially premiered in 2022 but experienced a significant delay before its second season debuted in January, primarily due to busy schedules and the simultaneous WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023.
Stiller and Apple CEO Tim Cook made the renewal announcement together in a lighthearted exchange, teasing the news. However, audiences can expect a shorter wait for the next season, with Stiller asserting that this is “definitely not” part of their plan.
In a previous appearance on the New Heights podcast before the season finale, Stiller emphasized that such a prolonged gap would not occur again. “No, no, the plan is not—definitely not. No, the plan is not, and hopefully, we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon. That will not be that,” he stated.
With the series officially renewed, it is hoped that updates on the start of production for the third season and expected premiere dates will be shared soon.
Season 2 featured the return of Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette, along with new regular Sarah Bock.
In Severance, Mark Scout (played by Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, where employees have undergone a severance procedure that surgically separates their memories between work and personal life. This bold experiment in “work-life balance” comes under scrutiny as Mark becomes embroiled in a mystery that compels him to confront the true essence of his work and his own identity.
In season two, Mark and his companions discover the severe repercussions of tampering with the severance barrier, leading them further down a troubling path.
