Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White underperformed at the box office.
To the surprise of – well, no one who's been following the film since its initial announcement – Disney's live-action Snow White has flopped at the box office, earning just over $87 million globally during its opening weekend. The film faced a variety of controversies, from the portrayal of the dwarf characters to lead actress Rachel Zegler’s remarks about both the original material and her outspoken political opinions. Snow White did debut in first place in North America this weekend but fell short of expectations with only $43 million domestically.
The movie, featuring Zegler as the titular character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, brought in an additional $44.3 million from 51 other markets, including a mere $900,000 from China, leading to a worldwide total of $87.3 million. Considering the estimated budget of $250-270 million before marketing costs, this is undoubtedly a weak start for a film that was anticipated to exceed $100 million globally this weekend.
In contrast, Disney’s latest "live-action" remake, Mufasa: The Lion King, began with a modest $122 million worldwide in December but ultimately grossed an impressive $717.5 million by the end of its run. However, with harsh reviews and negative word of mouth, Snow White seems poised to become one of Disney's significant box office failures. You can check out our review of the film here.

Snow White wasn't alone in underperforming this weekend, as the $45 million-budgeted mob drama The Alto Knights, featuring Robert De Niro in a dual role, only managed to earn $5 million globally, with $3.2 million from North America and $1.8 million from international markets.
