Announcement made for a John Wick sequel, an animated prequel, and a spin-off featuring Donnie Yen.
In a surprising three-part announcement, Lionsgate has thrilled John Wick fans by revealing not only a sequel but also an animated prequel and a spin-off featuring Donnie Yen's character, a blind assassin.
During CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, shared that Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the titular assassin for a fifth installment, with Chad Stahelski returning to produce and direct.
The studio further showcased their franchise strength by announcing that John Wick will be featured in an animated prequel film directed by Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: Rising) and scripted by Vanessa Taylor (The Shape of Water). Reeves will lend his voice to the character, and the story will delve into Wick's past before the events of the first film, focusing on his struggle to complete The Impossible Task in order to escape the High Table and reunite with his beloved.
Additionally, a new trailer for the Ballerina spin-off, starring Ana de Armas, was unveiled, and Lionsgate revealed that Donnie Yen will direct and star in his own project centered around his blind assassin, Caine. This film is being pitched as a Hong Kong-style action thriller, with Mattson Tomlin, known for The Batman Part II and BRZRKR, writing the script.
The John Wick franchise has achieved over $1 billion in global earnings, with John Wick: Chapter 4 earning a record $426 million, so it’s understandable that Lionsgate is eager to capitalize on its success.
