Sydney Sweeney is in discussions for a live-action Gundam film.

Deadline reports that Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You, is in the final stages of negotiations with Legendary Entertainment to join the cast of their live-action mecha film, Gundam.

The Gundam movie has been in the works at Legendary for several years, as the studio collaborates with Bandai Namco Filmworks, the owner of the Japanese franchise that debuted in 1979 with the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.

While plot details about the Gundam film remain confidential, the story is set in a future where a population crisis forces humanity to relocate to space colonies, and the Earth Federation is engaged in conflict with the separatist Principality of Zeon, waging war through giant robot mechs known as mobile suits.

Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth) is set to write and direct the Gundam film, having taken over from Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island), who was initially attached to direct when the project was first announced by Legendary.

If negotiations are successful, Gundam will add to Sweeney's already busy schedule. The actress is presently filming the third season of HBO’s Euphoria and has completed projects including Ron Howard’s Eden, Michael Pearce’s Echo Valley, Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, and a yet-to-be-titled Christy Martin biopic by David Michod. Upcoming projects for her include Colman Domingo’s Scandalous, A24’s The Masque of the Red Death, and the recently announced I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, alongside her ongoing involvement in Sony’s long-anticipated Barbarella remake.

About Gary Collinson: Gary Collinson is a producer and writer in film, television, and digital content, who founded the pop culture website Flickering Myth. He is the producer of the gothic horror film 'The Baby in the Basket' and the upcoming suspense thriller 'Death Among the Pines.' He has spent ten years teaching and lecturing in film and media, and is the author of the non-fiction book 'Holy Franchise, Batman! Bringing the Caped Crusader to the Screen.'
