Honoring Val Kilmer

In memory of the iconic Val Kilmer, who has sadly passed away at 65, we are revisiting The B-Side’s 2022 episode focused on his career and some of his most underrated films. Below is the original description.

Today, we explore one of the most fascinating actors of his time: Val Kilmer! To help us delve into this intriguing figure, we have the remarkable Katie Walsh with us. She’s a must-follow on Twitter, co-hosts the captivating Miami Nice Podcast, and is an accomplished writer. The B-Sides we feature today include: Kill Me Again, At First Sight, The Salton Sea, and Mindhunters.

We talk about how Kilmer was a prodigy, being the youngest student ever admitted to Juilliard’s drama department, before his Broadway debut in the star-studded Slab Boys. We also discuss his well-known reputation for being challenging on set, along with those who championed him and his talent.

We dive into Dan’s strong appreciation for the not-so-well-aged The Salton Sea, briefly touch on other B-Sides such as Thunderheart, The Real McCoy, and Spartan, and reference Kilmer’s autobiography I’m Your Huckleberry and the 2021 documentary Val. Ultimately, we consider the idea that Val Kilmer may have been a movie star who never truly aspired to be one.
