One Battle After Another Trailer: Leonardo DiCaprio Is Unaware of the Time
The latest trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another features Leonardo DiCaprio’s anxious revolutionary character, Bob Ferguson, as he navigates a series of passwords necessary to seek assistance from fellow revolutionaries.
“When you can’t recall the answer to the coded question, ‘What time is it?’ you might have needed to study the rebellion text a bit more,” he’s advised.
This trailer, which follows a teaser for One Battle After Another released last week, clarifies the casting roles in the film, which is Anderson’s follow-up to 2021’s Licorice Pizza. Teyana Taylor portrays Ferguson’s wife, who hails from a lineage of revolutionaries. Chase Infiniti plays the couple’s daughter, whom Ferguson desperately tries to protect after an assault on their home by Col. Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn).
DiCaprio’s Ferguson eventually encounters a more self-assured revolutionary, portrayed by Benicio Del Toro, whom Ferguson refers to as “sensei.” The trailer concludes with Ferguson passionately exclaiming, “Viva la revolucion!”
In addition, One Battle After Another marks the first collaboration between Anderson and DiCaprio, while also reuniting Anderson with Penn, who made a memorable appearance in Licorice Pizza.
The film also features Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, and Licorice Pizza star Alana Haim. Filming took place in locations such as Sacramento, California, and El Paso, Texas.
One Battle After Another will be released in theaters on September 26.
This movie is Anderson’s second adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel; Pynchon also authored the 2009 novel that inspired Inherent Vice, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as a stoner detective.
One Battle After Another draws inspiration from Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland, set in 1984, which tells the story of 1960s rebels pursued by a relentless federal prosecutor.
The new film appears to deviate significantly from the original material — it is set in a different era rather than the 1980s. While phone booths are still present, the atmosphere has a somewhat dystopian feel.
In August, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Warner Bros. film has a budget of $140 million, with DiCaprio receiving a $20 million salary.
This figure has garnered attention since Anderson’s most successful film to date, There Will Be Blood, grossed $76 million at the box office.
The larger budget for One Battle After Another is seen as warranted due to DiCaprio’s involvement — a rare guarantee in terms of box office success — and the prestige of directing a Paul Thomas Anderson film.
