Has the failure of Snow White stopped all Disney live-action remakes, such as Tangled?
Snow White has not performed at the box office as strongly as Disney had anticipated, which may have implications for other productions, including their previously planned adaptation of Tangled. According to THR, Disney's live-action reimagining of its 2010 animated film is currently on hold. The film has been under development for a while, with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) directing and a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder).
While the studio's history with live-action adaptations of their classic works has been inconsistent, none have caused Disney as much trouble as Snow White. As of now, the film has earned only $69 million domestically and $145 million globally against a production budget of $270 million. With controversies surrounding the production and its two lead actresses, it seemed problematic from the start, but these figures are quite surprising.
The report does not clarify whether Tangled will ultimately be produced, mentioning that it’s unclear if a creative overhaul is in order or if they will simply wait until the Snow White situation settles. Disney plans to release another live-action remake this summer, with Lilo & Stitch—a remake of the 2002 animated film—scheduled for May. This film has received more favorable initial reactions, but only time will reveal its success.
