Ponyboi Trailer: River Gallo is Escaping from Dylan O’Brien
Following its debut at last year's Sundance Film Festival, Esteban Arango’s Ponyboi is set to hit theaters this summer. Starring River Gallo (who also penned the screenplay), Dylan O’Brien (who had a significant presence at this year’s Sundance with Twinless), along with Murray Bartlett, Victoria Pedretti, and Indya Moor, the film is produced under FOX Entertainment Studios’ new Tideline banner. Scheduled for release on June 27, it will implement a direct-to-audience theatrical distribution approach crafted by GATHR. The first trailer has been released ahead of the premiere.
Here’s the synopsis: “Set over a single day, a young sex worker named Ponyboi (Gallo) is thrust into turmoil when a drug deal goes awry, forcing him to flee from the mob and his abusive pimp (Dylan O’Brien). With the assistance of a mysterious cowboy named Bruce (Murray Bartlett), Ponyboi navigates through New Jersey's underworld in search of freedom."
In his review, John Fink remarked, “Somehow this blend of conventional crime-genre elements with touches of camp romance is effective; they mirror Ponyboi’s distinct perspective. Gallo, who also authored the screenplay, presents a viewpoint we haven’t encountered before: someone grappling with the world’s expectations for him to conform. This reflects also in the film's style. The striking contrast between the moments Ponyboi endures Vinny’s violent environment and the tender scenes shared with Bruce (where drag artist Chiquitita sings Kali Uchis’ 'Melting' to them in a bar) never feels disjointed; director Esteban Arango masterfully balances the tonal shifts.”
