Director Nia DaCosta discusses The Marvels and its unfortunate aftermath.
Nia DaCosta is an accomplished filmmaker with a distinct vision for her projects, yet even she found it challenging to manage the Marvel Studios system. A few years after the release of The Marvels, DaCosta has shared her insights on what transpired.
During her appearance at Dublin’s second annual screenwriting festival, Storyhouse Ireland, DaCosta expressed her thoughts on the aftermath of the film, mentioning: “It was interesting because there was a certain point when I realized, ‘Okay, this isn’t going to be the movie that I pitched or even the first version that I filmed.’ So, I understood that this had become an experience, a learning curve, and it truly enhances your strength as a filmmaker in terms of your capacity to navigate.”
DaCosta further elaborated on the challenges during the film’s post-production, emphasizing that she did not depart from the project and subsequently began working on her new film, Hedda: “They had a schedule, and certain preparations were underway, so you just have to fully embrace the process. The way they produce those films is quite different from how I would ideally prefer to make a film. So, you just have to commit to the process and hope for a positive outcome. The best outcome didn’t occur this time, but you have to have faith in the system.”
The Marvels generated $206 million globally against a production budget of $374 million, making it the lowest-grossing film in the MCU. Meanwhile, DaCosta’s Hedda is scheduled for release this October, and she will direct 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, set for January 2026.
Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, has regained her identity from the oppressive Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. However, unforeseen repercussions result in Carol bearing the weight of a destabilized universe. When her responsibilities lead her to an unusual wormhole associated with a Kree revolutionary, her powers become intertwined with those of Jersey City's super-fan, Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, who is now astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau of S.A.B.E.R. Together, this unconventional trio must unite and learn to work together to save the universe in “The Marvels.”
Directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), The Marvels features performances from Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.
