Warp Films is developing a TV drama based on Threads, produced by the team behind Adolescence.
Following the tremendous success of its Netflix drama Adolescence, UK production company Warp Films is now set to scare a new generation with a television adaptation of the BAFTA-winning apocalyptic drama Threads from 1984. Directed by Mick Jackson and written by Barry Hines, Threads portrays a grim depiction of a nuclear attack on the UK by the USSR, along with the devastating effects of the ensuing fallout and nuclear winter on those who survive.
The film made its debut on BBC Two in 1984, earning seven BAFTA nominations and winning four, including Best Single Drama. In recent years, it has attracted a new audience, with remastered Blu-ray releases and a 40th-anniversary showing on BBC Four last year contributing to its renewed acclaim.
“Threads was, and continues to be, a raw and truthful drama that envisions the harrowing consequences of nuclear war on everyday individuals,” remarked Mark Herbert from Warp Films. “This narrative perfectly resonates with our mission of creating impactful, grounded stories that connect deeply with viewers. Reinterpreting this classic film as a television drama allows us a unique opportunity to investigate its relevance today.”
“Threads is undeniably a powerful tale, and currently, its significance feels stronger than ever,” noted Emily Feller, CCO and executive producer at Warp Films. “This adaptation will enable us to explore new interpretations in the context of the present day. We envision emphasizing how resilience and connection can provide hope in the darkest of times. Through this perspective, a reimagining of this remarkable film can reassess its importance both then and now, allowing us to engage with a contemporary audience.”
