Joe Dante announces that the sequel to Little Shop of Horrors is no longer in development.
The cult classic 80s musical horror-comedy Little Shop of Horrors was poised for a long-awaited sequel, but those plans are now officially dead. Filmmaker Joe Dante confirmed the project's status in a recent interview with The Direct.
“The word is ‘stasis,’ not status. Right now, like many projects in town, nothing is progressing, and while we hope that will change, it’s not the ideal time to get projects underway,” Dante stated to the outlet.
Reports indicate that this production was quite close to realization. A story from last year suggested that a budget had been allocated for Little Shop of Halloween Horrors and that the cast was in the process of being put together. Charles S. Haas (Gremlins 2: The New Batch) wrote the screenplay, envisioned as a ‘spiritual successor.’
Originally a low-budget film from 1960 by Roger Corman, Little Shop of Horrors gained considerable acclaim with its 1982 off-Broadway musical version by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. It was subsequently adapted into a film musical in 1986, directed by Frank Oz and featuring Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, and Ellen Greene.
The story follows a nerdy florist named Seymour who stumbles upon a peculiar, talking plant that thrives on human blood. As the plant (Audrey II) flourishes, it brings Seymour notoriety but demands increasingly sinister sacrifices. Chaos ensues as the plant’s true motives come to light.
