The story has concluded as Peacock has declared the cancellation of its murder mystery dramedy, Based on a True Story, after two seasons.
The series featured Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a couple who decide to launch a true crime podcast following a local mystery. It was created by Craig Rosenberg, with Annie Weisman taking over as showrunner for the second season.
Based on a True Story debuted in 2023 to generally favorable reviews; however, unlike other streaming platforms, Peacock does not disclose audience metrics, making it unclear how the viewership for the second season may have changed, if that played a role in their decision to forgo a third season.
In the second season, new parents Ava and Nathan Bartlett are navigating the challenges of parenthood three months in. While focused on her family, Ava is eager to overcome her true crime obsession and return to her real estate career, while Nathan trains private tennis clients. However, a new string of murders pulls her back into the fray—could Matt be responsible for the killings? Is Tory, now involved with Matt, at risk? For a time, life seems enjoyable—Ava’s TikTok habit and her new friend Drew offer a pleasant distraction, and Nathan is all in on revitalizing his tennis career and rekindling his friendship with Matt—until danger arrives, quite literally.
Based on a True Story features Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, and Liana Liberato.
