In the trailer for the reboot of the 1997 slasher film "I Know What You Did Last Summer," a fisherman figure is once again targeting the youth of Southport. However, this time the young characters have an advantage: they remember what has transpired before. The character portrayed by Chase Sui Wonders seeks out 90s survivor Julie James, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt.
“Someone is pursuing us,” Wonders’ character tells James. “I need your assistance.”
James dramatically responds, “I have just one question — what did you do last summer?”
Evidently, they accidentally ended someone's life! If the new film, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, stays true to the engaging premise of the original 1997 movie, directed by Jim Gillespie and penned by Scream writer Kevin Williamson, based on Lois Duncan's book, this should hold.
The new trailer also hints that the reboot will be intensely violent — indeed, it features star Madelyn Cline attempting to relax with a bath bomb and a guided meditation, but the bath bomb turns the water a rather disturbing color. A foreshadowing moment!
In fact, it’s not merely foreshadowing — while Cline’s character is soaking, her male companion, played by Jonah Hauer-King, is being attacked with a harpoon.
Duncan’s novel first emerged in 1973, demonstrating that each generation deserves its own interpretation of a murderous fisherman targeting young people who made a single misstep. In this version, the young victims are played by Wonders, Cline, and Tyriq Withers.
The accidental murderers from the 1997 film also sought guidance from an older figure — in the original, it was the secluded Melissa Egan (Anne Heche). Julie James, having navigated similar situations in both "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and its sequel, appears to be coping better than Egan, as she is seen walking about what looks like a charming campus.
Freddie Prinze Jr. returns as Ray Bronson, giving a serious warning at a town meeting based on his own intense experiences. However, his real-life wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, will not reprise her role as Helen Shivers, who is confirmed to be deceased. The same holds true for Ryan Phillippe’s character, Barry Cox.
Recently, Gellar stated to People, “I am dead.” However, she still remains connected to the world of "I Know What You Did Last Summer":
“My best friend is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is continuity,” she mentioned. “I’m always the one reminding her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial title.”
The new film, written by Sam Lansky and Robinson, is scheduled for a theatrical release by Sony Pictures on July 18.
Additionally, the franchise includes a direct-to-video entry, "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer," from 2006, which presented a separate storyline distinct from the original two films, featuring none of the original cast.
The arrival of the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" trailer also provides an opportunity to highlight the unsettling trailer for the unrelated film "Last Summer," which features a trio of teenagers portrayed by Richard Thomas, Bruce Davison, and Barbara Hershey, who engage in troublesome activities concerning a younger teen, played by Catherine Burns, who received an Oscar nomination for her performance. One can’t help but speculate if this film influenced Duncan when she penned "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
