Sydney Sweeney and Jon M. Chu are set to adapt the Split Fiction video game.
Although Split Fiction was just launched on gaming platforms last month, a film adaptation is already in the works, with Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You) set to star under the direction of Jon M. Chu (Wicked). According to Variety, the movie will be adapted by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, known for their work on Deadpool and Wolverine. The game itself was released on March 6 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Switch 2 release scheduled for June 5, coinciding with the console's launch.
Split Fiction “merges elements of fantasy and science fiction, depicting two authors, Mio and Zoe, who find themselves trapped within the worlds they created.” The game quickly achieved bestseller status, exceeding two million copies sold in its first week. It hasn’t been disclosed which of the leading female characters Sweeney will play in the film.
In addition to her acting role, Sweeney will also serve as an executive producer, with Chu producing under his company Electric Somewhere alongside Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson from Story Kitchen, who aim to pitch the film to various studios to initiate a bidding war.
This marks Sweeney's second video game-related project this week, as she is also collaborating with Michael Bay on an adaptation of the classic Sega arcade game Outrun.
Sweeney has been extremely busy recently as she ventures into producing, following her roles in the films Anyone But You and Immaculate. She will soon appear in the Apple TV+ film Echo Valley, Ron Howard’s Eden, and Paul Feig’s The Housemaid. Future projects on her slate include the third season of Euphoria, The Masque of the Red Death, the biopic Scandalous! about Sammy Davis Jr. and Kim Novak, the thriller I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, and a live-action Gundam movie.
