Big Finish has launched Doctor Who: The Companion Chronicles – Families, a new box set featuring four dramatized readings that explore the stories of each companion of the First Doctor. This box set can be found on the Big Finish website and includes adventures for Steven, Dodo, Vicki, and the Doctor’s granddaughter.
In this set, Peter Purves returns as Steven, Carole Ann Ford reprises her role as the Doctor’s granddaughter, and Maureen O’Brien plays Vicki. Stephen Noonan portrays the First Doctor, while Lauren Cornelius makes her debut in the Companion Chronicles as Dodo, with Duncan Wisbey taking on various roles.
The four new adventures include:
‘The Temple of Light’ by Jonathan Morris, where the TARDIS and time itself are frozen, leaving Vicki among an entirely unfamiliar civilization. With the Doctor, Ian, and Barbara missing, can Vicki locate her friends and restore the flow of time?
Maureen O’Brien, who plays Vicki, remarked: “I don’t know how people write Doctor Who scripts – they are always tremendously inventive. This one was a joy. Vicki embodies her typical spirit of adventurous defiance, a refusal to be overcome by anything, boundless curiosity, and unique humanity.”
In ‘Stardust and Ashes’ by Ian Potter, Susan tells a tale from the past when she and her family were trapped by a machine intelligence. There’s always something to glean from people's situations and their surroundings: 'even in the ashes of hope, we can sometimes see stardust.'
In ‘The White Ship’ by Paul Morris, the Doctor and Steven arrive in Normandy during Henry I’s departure to England. Coincidentally, it is the day the White Ship sank, and somehow, Steven is mistaken for Stephen of Blois, a future king of England.
Peter Purves shared: “I thought it was a fantastic story. It was a historical moment I’d never encountered before. During my time on the TV show, I always enjoyed the historical episodes. Historical scripts were always much more enjoyable to perform.”
Lastly, in ‘The Y Factor’ by Christopher Cooper, the First Doctor and Dodo Chaplet, aided by septuagenarian jujitsu expert Edith Garrud, uncover an alien fungus that frightfully transforms evil thoughts into evil actions.
Doctor Who – The Companion Chronicles: Families can be purchased now from the Big Finish website, available as a download for £24.99 or as a limited Collector’s edition 4 CD box set for £30.99.
