IDW Dark has announced a prequel series to Event Horizon titled Dark Descent.

Prepare to reboard the Event Horizon for a brand-new twisted narrative, as IDW Publishing reveals Event Horizon: Dark Descent, an official prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson’s cult classic sci-fi horror from 1997.

Set to debut in August under the IDW Dark imprint, Event Horizon: Dark Descent is a limited series consisting of five issues, penned by multiple Eisner Award-winning author Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness) and illustrated by Tristan Jones (Aliens: Defiance).

“It’s a tremendous honor to be given the opportunity to work with such a cherished film; I take this responsibility very seriously, and I have some incredibly thrilling plans,” Ward expresses. “Expect some major gory moments. You’ll never view the film in the same way again.”

“I believe what Christian is developing and expanding within the lore will catch people off guard,” Jones adds. “It has certainly provided me with a lot of intense, visceral material to visualize, which is always exciting. Plus, knowing this is being created in direct collaboration with the original film's team helps reinforce that this will be something fans of the movie will want to experience with us.”

Set before the film's events and entirely approachable for new readers, this narrative explores the astonishing fate of the original Event Horizon crew. What truly transpired with Captain Kilpack and the first crew as their ship ventured through a horrific realm of unimaginable torments? Abandon all hope as demonic entities—led by Paimon, the eyeless King of Hell—unleash pain and pure malevolence upon the crew in this captivating tale.

Event Horizon: Dark Descent #1 will hit the shelves in August 2025.
