With the Cannes Film Festival approaching, the event has unveiled its Classics selection, showcasing new restorations, films centered on filmmaking, and much more. Notable highlights include Stéphane Ghez’s documentary *David Lynch, une énigme à Hollywood* (Welcome to Lynchland) about the late director, Quentin Tarantino appearing in person to present two films by George Sherman, and works by Edward Yang, John Woo, Stanley Kubrick, Charlie Chaplin, Mikio Naruse, Marcel Pagnol, and others.

**THE GOLD RUSH: 100TH ANNIVERSARY!**
Following *La Maman et la putain*, *L’Amour fou*, and *Napoléon* by Abel Gance, the Cannes Film Festival will debut Charlie Chaplin’s *The Gold Rush* as a worldwide pre-opening film on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 3 PM in Debussy Theater.
*The Gold Rush* by Charlie Chaplin (1925, 1h28, United States) (La Ruée vers l’or) is presented by Roy Export SAS with support from mk2. The 4K restoration was conducted by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, utilizing elements created by Photoplay and archival materials generously provided by the BFI National Archive, Blackhawk Films, the Lobster Films Collection, Das Bundesarchiv, the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the George Eastman Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The global re-release is organized by mk2 Films on June 26, 2025.
The screening will feature Arnold Lozano, Director of Roy Export SAS.
**AMORES PERROS 25 YEARS LATER**
Recognized as a pivotal work in early 2000s Mexican cinema and winner of the Grand Prize at the Semaine de la Critique at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, *Amores perros* retains its impactful resonance. Join Alejandro G. Iñárritu to celebrate the anniversary of his debut film.

This restoration of *Amores perros* was completed in 2020 by the Criterion Collection, Estudio Mexico Films, and Altavista Films. The picture was restored from the 35 mm original camera negative, scanned in 16-bit 4K resolution. The coloring was supervised and approved by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto at Harbor Picture Company in Santa Monica, California. Picture restoration was executed at the Criterion Collection in New York.
The new 5.1 surround soundtrack was crafted at Cinematic Media and Churubusco from digitally archived soundtrack stems and print master using Avid’s Pro Tools and iZotope RX. Fresh sound effects and tailored Foley work were meticulously added throughout the movie. The soundtrack received approval from Iñárritu, supervising sound editor/designer Martín Hernández, and Jon Taylor mixed it at NBCUniversal StudioPost.

**DIANE KURYS’ NEW FILM WORLD PREMIERE**
The festivities will commence on May 13 with Amélie Bonnin’s *Partir un jour*. It’s noteworthy that Diane Kurys was the first female director to open the Cannes Film Festival in 1987 with *Un Homme amoureux*. This year, Kurys returns to the Croisette to present her interpretation of the passionate and captivating story of the legendary couple Simone Signoret and Yves Montand at Agnès Varda Theater.

**T’ANG SHUSHUEN: AN INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER**
One of the few independent female directors in Hong Kong during the 1960s and 70s, T’ang Shushuen directed one of the first arthouse films from the Pearl of the Orient. *The Arch* premiered worldwide at Cannes in 1969, blending traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern European cinematic styles.
