The Criterion Channel's programming for June highlights Alan Rudolph, Johnnie To, Gene Hackman, and others.
A couple of months ago, when I talked to Alan Rudolph, he mentioned that Criterion had attempted to release his (remarkable, essential) Remember My Name, but were impeded by music rights—a situation so intricate that a lawyer hired by the director gave up. I like to believe that something has changed in under 60 days: Remember My Name will be streamed on the Criterion Channel as part of a grouping alongside Afterglow, Trouble In Mind, and Breakfast of Champions, which has recently undergone a 4K restoration. This month is particularly focused on retrospectives and includes a 12-title Johnnie To series, several films from René Clair, highlights from Amy Holden Jones and Ougie Pak, and Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip series in both television and film formats. Additionally, Gene Hackman will be honored with six titles.
One of those titles, Night Moves, will receive a Criterion Edition; along with it, Les Blank’s A Poem Is a Naked Person and Claude Berri’s double feature Jean de Florette / Manon of the Spring will also be released. Jane Schoenbrun has teamed up with Michael Koresky to co-curate a 'Queersighted' selection centered on coming-of-age stories, spanning works from Vincente Minnelli’s Tea and Sympathy to D.E.B.S. Pride Month will also see the addition of more LGBTQ+ programming through various features (from directors like Alain Guiraudie, Gregg Araki, Stanley Kwan, Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, and Chantal Akerman) as well as numerous shorts. Four films related to Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley will be available for streaming, along with a suitably timed collection of pool-themed films.
