The prequel to Game of Thrones, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been pushed back to 2026.
Fans of George R.R. Martin are quite accustomed to lengthy wait times; now, along with the third season of House of the Dragon and the notoriously postponed Winds of Winter, they will have to anticipate a bit longer for HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, which chronicles the exploits of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. Martin has penned several novellas that feature Dunk and Egg as they journey through Westeros and engage with the Targaryen dynasty. This series is set approximately 100 years after House of the Dragon and 100 years prior to Game of Thrones.
Initially, the series was expected to debut in Fall 2025, but during Warner Bros. Discovery’s Upfronts presentation, HBO head Casey Bloys unveiled a teaser trailer that confirmed a premiere in 2026. He later specified that it would be scheduled for the early months of 2026 during winter.
This announcement comes as House of the Dragon is in production for its third season, which is set to conclude with a fourth season, as HBO revealed last summer. Several other Game of Thrones spin-offs are also being developed, but none have advanced to a proper development stage yet.
A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes roamed Westeros: a youthful, naïve yet brave knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his small squire, Egg. The story is set in a time when the Targaryen lineage still occupies the Iron Throne, and the last dragon remains fresh in the memories of those alive, leading to great destinies, formidable enemies, and perilous adventures for these extraordinary friends.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features Peter Claffey, Dexter Sol Ansell, Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Sam Spruell, Daniel Ings, and Tanzyn Crawford.
