A John Rambo prequel is on the way, directed by Jalmari Helander, known for his work on Sisu.
Rambo is set to return to theaters, albeit without Sylvester Stallone, as a prequel titled John Rambo is currently in development. Deadline reported the announcement from Cannes, made by Millennium Films. While specific plot details are still under wraps, John Rambo will delve into the character's origins during the Vietnam War and the traumatic events that led him to become the figure seen in the iconic 1982 film First Blood.
Jalmari Helander (Big Game, Sisu) will direct the film, with a screenplay written by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam). Casting for a young John Rambo is underway, with production scheduled to commence in Thailand in October. Although Sylvester Stallone is reportedly "aware" of the project, he has not been approached for a cameo or a producing role.
The character of Rambo was created by author David Morrell in his novel First Blood, which was later adapted into the classic action film. The story follows veteran John Rambo as he passes through a small town and becomes the target of its corrupt sheriff, leading to a one-man war against local law enforcement and awakening his trauma. Stallone has since portrayed Rambo in four sequels, with the latest being 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood.
“I have been the biggest fan of Rambo since I was 11,” Helander stated. “It feels surreal to be in a position where I can create my own Rambo movie. The series of events that have brought me here has, in a wonderful way, made my entire childhood make sense. I’m eager to bring the greatest action hero back to the big screen where he belongs.”
“We are excited to present a new chapter in the Rambo legacy. This project pays homage to one of the greatest franchises in movie history and aims to resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers,” said Jonathan Yunger, President of Millennium. “With Jalmari Helander leading the way, a filmmaker of extraordinary vision and energy, we have the ideal director to create a high-concept, action-packed experience.”
