Lee Chang-dong is set to shoot his next film, Possible Love, this fall.

It has been an excruciatingly long seven years since the premiere of Lee Chang-dong's Burning at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, but the director has remained active. Recently, a series of restorations of his earlier works was released, along with an English collection of short stories just a few months ago. Additionally, he has hinted at a new feature film project, and more details have now emerged.

Titled 가능한 사랑 (translated as Possible Love), Lee Chang-dong aims to begin filming as soon as this fall, with the goal of completing it by the first half of next year for a potential premiere at Cannes 2026, as reported by Naver. While specific plot details are not yet available, the cast is expected to feature Jeon Do-yeon (Secret Sunshine), Seol Kyung-gu (Peppermint Candy), and Jo In-sung (Moving). The film is said to be a co-production between Korea and France, with more information likely to be released soon.

"I have always believed in and sought to create films that reflect the reality we live in, beginning with my film career in Green Fish. The ongoing question I have as a filmmaker is how much a film can reflect and examine the reality of our lives," the director shared with us last year. "The differences in how I portray reality between Green Fish and Burning may stem from the significant changes in the world or our perspectives on it. In Green Fish, I aimed to demonstrate that the logic of violence prevalent in Korean society – the logic of economic development through destructive gentrification and the ruthless mentality of gang members – are not so dissimilar. The issues facing Korean society were more straightforward and obvious back then. Today, reality is more complex. Economic inequality has increased, individual lives feel more powerless than ever, yet it is challenging to identify a single cause. With the mystery-thriller format of Burning, I wanted the audience to contemplate the enigmas of our current society."

Tune in to a recent conversation with the director about his short story collection.
