4K Restoration Trailer for Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse Investigates the Turbulent Production of Francis Ford Coppola’s War Masterpiece

Just a week ago, we received the announcement that Mike Figgis’ documentary Megadoc, which delves into the creation of Francis Ford Coppola’s long-in-development passion project Megalopolis, would be hitting theaters. However, before that, an exceptional depiction of the filmmaking process will be shown in U.S. and U.K. cinemas.

Featuring remarkable footage captured by Coppola’s late wife, Eleanor Coppola, and directed by Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse portrays the challenging production of Apocalypse Now. Now available in 4K restoration, it will be shown in theaters across the U.S. and U.K. starting July 4th, with a U.K. disc release following later that month, along with the arrival of a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: “In the late 1970s, acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola, along with his cast and crew, ventured into the thick jungles of the Philippines to start working on what would ultimately become his masterpiece, Apocalypse Now. However, the transition from script to screen quickly devolved into a harrowing, life-threatening ordeal that mirrored the film’s storyline. Confronted with numerous challenges, one of the most groundbreaking films ever produced had one of the most infamous shoots in cinema history, affecting nearly everyone involved.”

As we wait for information regarding a U.S. disc release, you can watch the trailer and view the poster created by Akiko Stehrenberger below.

For details on the disc release, set to arrive in the U.K. on July 28, check out Live for Film, which includes a 64-page booklet featuring new essays about the film, tributes to Eleanor Coppola, and fresh interviews with Roman Coppola, Sofia Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola, and Fax Bahr.
