The Mass Effect TV series has a new showrunner in Doug Jung.

After years of fluctuating development, the upcoming series adaptation of the popular Bioware and EA video game franchise Mass Effect by Amazon MGM has found its showrunner for this grand sci-fi project. According to Deadline, Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) will be at the helm of the series.

Mass Effect centers around Commander Shepherd, who becomes the first human Spectre, a highly skilled soldier of the Galactic Council, as they delve into the mysteries of an ancient galactic menace known as the Reapers. With the support of allies from various alien races, Shepherd must prevent the Reapers from annihilating all life in the galaxy.

The original Mass Effect was launched on Xbox 360, allowing players to assume the role of Shepherd, customizing their appearance, gender, and backstory in a franchise distinguished by its adaptability to the player's choices. Following this, Mass Effect 2 and 3 were released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, along with a remastered Mass Effect Legendary Edition that encompassed all three games and was released in 2021 for Xbox One and PS4.

Jung, who is an executive producer on Apple TV+’s upcoming drama Chief of War starring Jason Momoa, joins Daniel Casey (F9: The Fast Saga), who is responsible for the series' writing. The executive producers include Karim Zreik for Cedar Tree Productions, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu for Arad Productions, and Michael Gamble from EA.
