July on the Criterion Channel includes Miami Vice, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Jacques Rozier, and more.
Our choice to designate Miami Vice as the greatest action film of this century about eight years ago was not made lightly or received by everyone, but fortune favors the audacious. As part of its recognition, Michael Mann’s classic will be available on Criterion this July as a part of Miami Neonoir, which also includes Larry Clark’s Bully, the recently deceased George Armitage’s Miami Blues, Out of Sight, Body Heat, and John Bailey’s lesser-known China Moon. In terms of series, films focusing on David Lynch, Picasso, and Basquiat are included in Portraits of Artists, while Summer Romances provides an opportunity to envision a more fulfilling experience than watching movies on a laptop.
July is a month rich in retrospectives: it features the recently restored, essential films of Jacques Rozier, works directed and filmed by D.A. Pennebaker, shorts by Suzan Pitt, along with programs highlighted by Lino Brocka, Moustapha Alassane, Michael Haneke, and Hou Hsiao-hsien, alongside an exhibition on the Rolling Stones in film. Killer of Sheep, the five-film Antoine Doinel series, Basquiat, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch will stream in Criterion Editions, while restorations of Susan Streitfeld’s Female Perversions, Ann Hui’s July Rhapsody, Brocka’s Bona, and Thomas McGuire’s 92 in the Shade will debut for streaming. A nod to Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers, a film I adored at 22 and now hesitate to revisit, fearing either disappointment or longing for the life I wish I had.

Eight years ago, we made the significant decision to designate Miami Vice as the greatest action film of this century. This choice was not made casually, nor was it met with complete agreement, but fortune rewards the daring. As part of its recognition, Michael Mann's classic will be available for streaming on Criterion this July, included in the Miami Neonoir collection, alongside Larry Clark's Bully and the recently departed.
