Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor join The Backrooms for A24's adaptation of the viral horror sensation.

A24 has successfully secured an impressive lead pair for their adaptation of the web series The Backrooms, with The Worst Person in the World’s Renate Reinsve announced to join Chiwetel Ejiofor in the horror film. According to a report from Deadline, the stars of The Life of Chuck and A Different Man have been cast in the movie, directed by 19-year-old horror influencer and filmmaker Kane Parsons.

The series debuted in 2022 with a short film titled The Backrooms: Found Footage, which has amassed over 60 million views. It revolves around a fictional research institute named Async, which uncovers the backrooms and attempts to explore and document their findings within the expansive, extra-dimensional realms that constitute this world. Each episode showcases the peculiar and unusual anomalies encountered by the team in what appears to be a mundane corporate office space.

Reinsve earned the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her breakout role in Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, subsequently delivering strong performances in works such as A Different Man, Handling the Undead, and the critically acclaimed Apple TV series Presumed Innocent. Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is currently featured in Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck (read our review here).
