Russell Crowe is set to portray Ramirez in the remake of Highlander.
After several years in development with Henry Cavill set to star, Chad Stahelski’s forthcoming remake of Highlander has added Russell Crowe (Gladiator) to the cast.
Crowe will portray Ramirez, an immortal warrior who mentors the newly-immortal Connor MacLeod in an ancient conflict secretly fought among immortals. This character was originally played by Sean Connery in the 1986 version.
Cavill will take on the role of MacLeod, with shooting scheduled to begin in London in September. Given Crowe's casting and the impending start of production, it's likely that more casting announcements for this highly anticipated film will emerge over the summer.
Highlander tells the story of Connor MacLeod, a Scottish Highlander from the 1500s who learns about his immortality. Under the guidance of Ramirez, another immortal, he battles others, adhering to the series’ tagline that states there can be only one. The original film became a cult classic and led to a franchise that includes multiple sequels and a television series.
Additionally, Stahelski will direct Highlander with a screenplay written by Michael Finch from John Wick: Chapter 4, while Amazon MGM is producing the project.
